Natural Areas
To the south of Crown Mountain Park lies approximately 40 acres of open space in a roughly triangular shaped piece of land. This is the other "half" of Crown Mountain Park. It is still directly under the management of Eagle County and is not included in the land that is leased by the District. However many people enjoying the park also enjoy the beauty and wide open space of the natural area. Although this land was also part of the former Forest Service tree farm it has been reclaimed and reseeded with native grasses. A grid like pattern of trails can still be seen that marked the blocks of land that were once used to grow native trees for our national forests.
At the time of the Planned Unit Development (PUD) submittal, the Crown Mountain Park & Recreation District also submitted a design proposal for the open space area. The idea has been to keep the open space preserved with the grid like trails, but with the possible addition of a riparian area in the shape of a series of smaller ponds. The design also includes the addition of three small, sheltered overlooks elevated above the rim of the Roaring Fork River corridor.
Although the design for the natural area is only conceptual at this time the land is still managed and open to the public by Eagle County.
