Crown Mountain Park & Recreation
The Crown Mountain Park Recreation District and the park design team showed great care in the design of this park. The majority of the design team were people from local firms with Roaring Fork area roots. The park is a place where people can come together to enjoy the activiites that turn a neighborhood into a community. A key element of the design is the balance between sports-oriented park facilities and passive, family-oriented park amenities. This park has something to offer for every segment of the community.

With its roots as a riparian environment, agricultural land, and a tree farm, Crown Mountain Park encompasses its history as well as the current and future culture of the community. There has been extensive planning and public input to create this design. Public involvement is critical and will continue to inform the park's design and construction so that ultimately Crown Mountain Park will be a successful reflection of the comunity.


History
The Crown Mountain Park and Recreation District was authorized by voters in November, 2002 and formally established in 2003. The 2002 vote also approved a $5.1 million bond issue. The District's Service Plan calls for the development of the former Mount Sopris Tree Farm property in El Jebel for park and recreation purposes.

The Tree Farm is a 124-acre parcel located in El Jebel, Colorado, approximately 7 miles east of Carbondale, Colorado, and 5 miles west of Basalt, Colorado. The parcel is located on Valley Road just south of Highway 82. It is bordered on the west by U.S. Forest Service property; to the south by the Roaring Fork River; and to the east by the Sopris Village subdivision.

The property is the former site of a USDA Forest Service Tree Nursery. It is generally flat but slopes gently from the north to the south. In 2001–2 Eagle County constructed a County & Community Center on the northeast corner of the property and also did the initial grading and seeding of a soccer and baseball field which are now within the District's jurisdiction.

The Crown Mountain District will be developing and managing the Park under a long-term lease from Eagle County, which will retain ownership of the property.
